Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
is the simple activity of ensuring a website can be found in search engines for words and phrases relevant to what the site is offering and displays the information which is in the Organic listings (Free listings that is).

What is SEO, Exactly?

The goal of foundational SEO isn’t to cheat or “game” the search engines. The purpose of SEO is to communicate to the search engines your intentions so they can recommend your website for relevant searches.

What Search Engines Are Looking For

Search engines want to do their jobs as best as possible by referring users to websites and content that is the most relevant to what the user is looking for.

Content: Is determined by the theme that is being given, the text on the page, and the titles and descriptions, Meta Tags correlating with page content. (Keep in mind although Google doesn’t read Meta Tags but rather the page itself. However other Search Engines still do.)


Pay Per Clicks (PPC)

PPC is an internet advertising used to direct traffic to websites, in which an advertiser pays a publisher when the ad is clicked.

PPC is commonly associated with first-tier search engines, such as Google AdWords, Bing, Yahoo and even Facebook. With search engines, advertisers typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. In contrast, content sites commonly charge a fixed price per click rather than use a bidding system. PPC "display" advertisements, also known as "banner" ads, are shown on web sites with related content that have agreed to show ads and are typically not pay-per-click advertising. Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter have also adopted PPC as one of their advertising models.

However, websites can offer PPC ads. Websites that utilize PPC ads will display an advertisement when a keyword query matches an advertiser's keyword list, or when a content site displays relevant content. Such advertisements are called sponsored links or sponsored ads, and appear adjacent to, above, or beneath organic results on search engine results pages, or anywhere a web developer chooses on a content site.

Does SEM include SEO?

It all depends on who you ask. In the past it was. Today it mostly pertains to PPC or other paid types of marketing.
